The Mercedes-Benz Android Radio 4+64, with CarPlay and Radio Player

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS 450+ redefines the luxury sedan in the age of electric vehicles, but its automotive technology takes a kitchen sink approach.
Mercedes-Benz and its rivals in the luxury car segment are stuck with a capital letter as Tesla continues to gain significant market share. The 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS 450+, an electric vehicle equivalent to the company’s S-Class lineup, aims to bring back buyers, at least buyers of high-tech sedans. Starting at $102,310, the EQA 450+ equals or surpasses Tesla in electric vehicle range, amenities, comfort and advanced technology. But some stunning features detract from its high quality and price.
The EQS 450+ is available in three trim levels: Premium, Exclusive and Pinnacle. We tested the entry-level Premium trim, which starts at $102,310. That compares to the base price of $88,740 for a twin-engined Tesla Model S.
Regardless of trim, all EQS 450+ models are equipped with a 245-kilowatt electric motor that produces 329 horsepower and 417 lb-ft of torque. torque; the electric motor sends power to the rear wheels through a single-speed gearbox.
A 107.8 kWh lithium-ion battery powers the engine and provides a range of 350 miles (350 miles) on a full charge. However, in our tests, the EQS 450+ easily exceeded this range. We ran almost 450 miles. By comparison, the single-engine Polestar 2 has a range of 265 miles.
You can drain the battery from a charge in more than 30 minutes using a DC fast charger through the car’s charging system combo plug. Thanks to the 240V charging system and the J1772 connector, the battery can be fully charged in just 11 hours.
Standard exterior and performance features include 10-degree rear-wheel steering, 20-inch wheels with range-optimized 255/45R20 summer tires, adaptive suspension damping, air suspension, digital LED headlights, dynamic driving mode selection, shift paddles Controlled regenerative braking , electric folding mirrors with LED projectors of the Mercedes-Benz logo and seamless door handles.
You also get interior amenities including 64-color LED ambient lighting, biometric driver authentication, dual-zone automatic climate control with presets, heated and ventilated front seats, a panoramic glass roof, damaged or compromised technology, six 100-watt USB drives. C charging ports and wireless phone charging with NFC pairing.
The car is equipped with the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) infotainment system, consisting of a 12.8-inch OLED touchscreen instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. The dashboard provides access to Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth audio and hands-free calling, music streaming and apps, natural language voice control, over-the-air software updates and all vehicle settings.
The car also features a 15-speaker Burmester 3D surround sound system that provides electric car audio that replaces engine sounds, as well as HD and satellite AM/FM radio. Mercedes-Benz Navigation offers one year of free online map updates, route planning based on available tolls, and an improved video overlay system for easier navigation.
In addition to typical driver assistance systems such as Forward Collision Warning with Automatic Emergency Braking, Blind Spot Lane Keeping Assist and Driver Drowsiness Warning, the EQS 450+ also includes advanced safety features such as Evasion Assist. from steering and “car-to-X” function. communication for use with other similarly equipped vehicles and transport infrastructure.
The Exclusive package starts at $105,710 and includes multi-contour front seats with massage settings, quick-heat front seats, power front seats with memory, an air purification and aromatization system, and a head-up display. The top-of-the-line Pinnacle trim starts at $108,510 and includes heated and ventilated rear seats, power memory rear seats, an upgraded center armrest, and rear-seat wireless charging.
Our Premium trim model comes with other perks, including a 120V charging cable ($250); active ambient lighting ($590); anthracite 3D embossed optical trim ($540); Energizing Air Control Plus HEPA filter ($450); heated steering wheel. ($250), in-cabin MBUX gesture control ($350), multi-contour massage front seats ($1,100), and quick-heat front seats ($450). Including destination and shipping of $1,050, the final list price for our test model was $107,389.
The front of the EQS 450+ has a different design than the Mercedes, but the sedan looks stylish. In fact, it has the lowest drag coefficient of any production car. Carefully crafted details make it even more striking, including a black faux grille and a small three-pointed Mercedes star surrounding a prominent central logo, 20-inch aerodynamic wheels with more Mercedes stars and spiral LED taillights.
The curved instrument panel features sleek turbine-style metal air vents in each corner, while the wavy pattern gives the interior a unique, contemporary touch. The interior is spacious and has the luxury you expect from a Mercedes-Benz flagship. For example, both the driver and the passenger can choose the ideal fit depending on their height.
We didn’t get a chance to test the EQS with the 56-inch Hyperscreen infotainment system, but the standard dashboard touchscreen works well. The interface uses the company’s zero level design, which essentially means that all the main functions are always available directly from the main menu. We also like the car’s many useful features, such as the parking damage detector, which can tell you if someone has hit your car. However, when testing, we once received a false positive result.
The innovative driver assistance technology here is impressive. We didn’t have to use assisted steering, but we appreciated being able to project a beam onto the road in the adjacent lane when you turn on the turn signal, which is useful for night driving.
However, other methods seem flippant and even silly, like the Graphic Goodies feature that wishes us a happy Halloween and showcases pumpkin lanterns and other fall decorations. The other is a traffic light view that takes up most of the screen; it redundantly shows what the driver sees from the windshield (maybe just more). Luckily, you can disable both of these features.
In addition, the car supports Bluetooth connectivity for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, which is more convenient than a USB connection as it frees up a port. While CarPlay worked well most of the time during testing, at one point we received a useless message that something went wrong.
The 245 kW electric motor delivers instant torque and acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in 5.9 seconds, remarkable for a car weighing almost 3 tons. Whether it’s potholed city sidewalks or smooth highways, the EQS 450+ has an S-Class-like balance. The standard air suspension makes the ride silky smooth.
During testing, the vehicle exhibits greater stability in the Southern California canyon thanks to the rear axle steering, which can turn the rear wheels up to 10 degrees. It also drastically reduces the car’s turning radius, making the big sedan more compact, especially if you need to make a U-turn.
Our biggest gripe with the EQS is its weird regenerative braking. You can choose from four modes: None, Normal, Auto, and Maximum. Prevents the vehicle from coasting without regeneration; Normal mode simulates standard engine braking and captures some of the energy; Automatic mode determines how much to apply based on several factors; The maximum mode provides control of one pedal. In each mode, the brake pedal travel is unusually long and has a soft feel. More embarrassingly, in max mode the brake pedal is automatically lowered when stopped, resulting in us feeling the need to press harder on the pedal in mild panic to avoid colliding with the car in front of us at a traffic light.
Despite its quirks, the 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS 450+ Sedan is an impressive luxury electric vehicle that excels in comfort, innovation and performance. The car’s superb mileage is even enough to win back some customers who would otherwise consider the Tesla Model S, though in the end the Model S offers a more refined overall package. Meanwhile, if you’re looking for a sub-$100,000 luxury electric car, we’re also fans of the aforementioned Polestar 2 (starting at $45,900), even if it doesn’t offer great battery range.
